"Jacob bowed to Yetta, as elegantly as if they were about to launch themselves onto a dance floor, instead of into thin air. He would have been a good dance partner, Yetta thought with an ache. He wrapped his arms around Yetta; she wrapped her arms around him.
And then they jumped."
Summary:
This book is a thrilling book about the most horrible fire in factory history. The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire occured in 1911 in New York City during the Second Industrial Revolution, and that is when this book takes place. This book follows three girls, Bella, Yetta, and Jane, through the events occuring around the time of the fire. Bella, an Italian immigrant, comes to America trying to make herself a better life. She is easily taken advantage of, and this proves to some people very helpful. Bella wants to start over her life from the poor, horrible conditions in Italy. Yetta, a Jewish immigrant, runs into Bella when she needs help the most. Yetta and her sister are activists trying to get better conditions for the workers at the factory. Lastly, Jane comes into the story. She is not a factory worker, but a sheltered, rich daughter of a wealthy businessman. She will be forced into a marriage her father picks for her, and is dedicated to learning the social necessities needed to live her life. She meets her friend Eleanor, who invites Jane to a strike; The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Strike. This is the same march that Bella and Yetta are attending. The girls were destined to cross paths one day, and this is where they do it. The girls become fast friends, and experience one of the most horrible events in United States history and go through it together. This story covers women's rights, immigration, and the way women were treated in the factories. The story is a riveting one, and a page turner from the start.
