FORGOTTEN FIRE
BY: ADAM BAGDASARIAN
"I could still feel the thirst and hunger I had felt then;
I could still hear the voice behind me say,
'Why don't they just kill us now?'"
The book Forgotten Fire is mainly about the Armenian Genocide and also known as The forgotten holocaust. During the Armenian Genocide, around 1.5 million Armenian's were mercilessly murdered. The story is based off of Adam Bagdasarian's great uncle's experience of miraculously surviving the genocide. The book begins at the start of the genocide when the Vahan, the main character, father gets taken away, then it takes off from there and Vahan has to watch his two brothers get shot right in front of him. Vahan sees his world changing around him but he knows he cannot do anything nor does he really understand the changes. Every time he gets close to someone they are swept right out from under him. Vahan uses so many tactics to avoid getting killed. So, he lives as a beggar on the streets, dressing as a girl and even living undercover with the enemy who will nail horseshoes through his feet if Vahan gets caught. This book hides nothing and details everything. It will sweep you off your feet and into the world of the helpless Armenians who somehow the world has forgotten.
"Who does now remember the Armenians?"
- Adolf Hitler
In support of his argument that the world
would soon forget the extermination of a people.

Many people know about the Jewish Holocaust but do not know much about the Armenian Holocaust? The Genocide Museum is a place to learn about this event. The photo gallery put up by the Armenian National Institute gives good pictures to
illustrate what was happening during that time period.
The book is about 272 pages and includes an epilogue and a reader's circle guide to the book, it is available in paperback and hard cover.
Forgotten Fire was a National Book Award Finalist.
Reader's circle questions:
1. Why do you think the author included the quote from Hitler as the epigraph? Did your ideas change after reading forgotten Fire?
2. How did the attitude of the Armenian community change once the Turks took possession of the town and began the genocides?
3. What is the meaning of title Forgotten Fire?
STUDENT REVIEW
The book Forgotten Fire by Adam Bagdasarian, is a very moving book. It is for someone who liked sad stories and stories of despair. It has many tragedies but also hope. The action and terror is so vivid you are captured into it. I think that if you have a weakness for blood then this is not the book for you. However if you are interested in history, and you want to know about this forgotten genocide of the early 1900's this is definitely the book for you. When you finish the story you will left wondering what has happened to the world that these people were forgotten?
