                     Summary        

 

Based on a true story, Chinese Cinderella is

about a girl who is unwanted by her own family.

When Adeline is born her mother dies while giving birth to

her. Since that day, her siblings, father,

and her new step-mother have called her a

murderer due to the fact that her mother died.

She is growing up with the feeling of guilt and

hatred from her own family. Not just Adeline and

her family are struggling, but there is the Opium War

that China has to deal with as well. This war was

going on in the early 1940's.

 

 

 

 

 

                                                               About The Author

 

Adeline Yen Mah was born in Tianjin, China.  Her mother passed away two weeks after her birth. Like in the story, Adeline was considered bad luck  by her family. She is half French and half Chinese. The family was divided into two different classes, her father, step-mother, and their two children were upper class, and Adeline and her four other step- children were considered second class.

On Frebruary 7th, 1942 Japan began the invasion of Singapore. Many civilians fled into the monastery for refuge. The area around the moanstery was full of Allies troops and it was bombed during the Japanese air rades. The British surrendered on February 15th 1942 and Singapore became Syonan. On the 21st of February 1942 the Japenese launched the Sook Ching to exterminate anti-Japanese elemnt in Singapore.

                                                                 Plot Summary

 

The story takes place in China during the Second World War. Adeline Yeh Mah, is born into a rich and powerful family of Tianjin. The death of her mother after two weeks from giving birth to her leads her family to think that she is a source of bad luck.she is treated badly and is neglected by her father and her four siblings, big sister Lydia  and three brothers.Her father later remarries with a stunningly beautiful Eurasian girl, Jeanne Prosperi, age 17, who has a French father and Chinese mother.Adeline always struggles for her father’s attention, and the only way that Adeline knows is to study hard and get good grades. After a long time Adeline was send to Bording school, so she won't stay with her Grandfather, and her favorite aunt. The Step-Mother send Adeline to her hometown, because she knew that there was war there, and that people were running away from it. After two weeks Adeline was rescued by her favorite aunt, who brought her back to Hong Kong. After the the opium war was over Adeline was send to England for medical school. Her father was proud of her, and at the end the father eventually divorce the woman that made Adeline suffered.

                                                       Opinion on the book

 

This book was a true story that is both sad and comforting as well. It told us that even though we have family, some of them still neglect us but other loves us too. this book also taught us that everybody is equal even thoght they are diiferent than you. What she has been trough, a lot of us went to those kinds of sufferings and pain in our lives.
